I don’t usually read a ton of fantasy so when I went to this event Elise Kova was a new author to me! I have seen her in conversations with other authors and she’s great so I wanted to try out one of her books. I wasn’t disappointed !
This is an enthralling academia fantasy with romance surrounding a magic system based on tarot cards (which is super cool). You don’t need to know anything about tarot going in! I felt like the pacing was excellent and the magic system was very cool. Book 1 ends on a cliffhanger and so I’m excited for book two!
If you like fantasy and/or tarot give this a read!
Cool things I learned at the release event from Elise Kova in conversation with @domwritesbooks
- One word Elise uses to describe Arcana Academy? “Multi-layered”
- What sparked the idea of Arcana Academy? Elise likes tarot and reads tarot (non-professionally) herself. She tries to create magic systems that are grounded in something the reader will have some sort of knowledge of (though you don’t need to to read the book!)
- Advice to her self starting out: Don’t worry too much about the logistics of what a career is going to look like. No two authors are the same, even the very successful ones.
- [ ] More writing advice: if you don’t have fun writing it, they won’t have fun reading it.
- Cover illustration was done by Cocorrina, who Elise owns a necklace by and who also makes art for tarot cards. (Check her out here!: cocorina.co)
- Theme song of Arcana Academy? Love From The Other Side by Fall Out Boy. Two lyrics that’s inspired her: “Sending my love from the other side of the apocalypse” and “what would you trade the pain for?”.
- Kova shared there’s a glossary at the end of the book- not the beginning (though we get two maps!) because it may have spoilers. Don’t forget it’s there!
- Elise considers this a “Fanstasy romance” and not a “romantasy” since the primary plot is fantasy and romance is secondary.
